Obituary

Philip T Camp

May 23, 1938 – January 8,2024

Philip T Camp "Phil", 85, of Linwood, passed away peacefully in his home, January 8 surrounded by his family and his beloved caretaker and his buddy, Sally. Born on May 23, 1938, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Phil grew up in Somers Point and attended Pleasantville high school where he met his wife of 60 years, Mildred "Millie" (Sykes).

He served in the National Guard from 1956-1963 and worked at New Jersey Bell (Verizon) for 33 years and through hard work and dedication he worked his way up from starting off as a linesman up to management where he was one of the chief switch operators in Pleasantville operational center. Phil lived, the once upon a time, American dream where he worked with one Company and put himself in a fortunate spot to early retire at the young age of fifty-two and he never looked back as he enjoyed a 30 year plus retirement.

Phil was always busy as he began a woodworking/wood carving business which was more of a hobby because he loved and was so talented in making wood carvings, holiday figurines (Santa Clause) were his specialty, along with making all types of bird houses. You name it, he whittled it. He became so well known in the area, even the summer folks that traveled from Pennsylvania would stop by and bring him old family heirlooms, furniture or what have you to fix for them. He was brilliant with electronics in that he learned from working with his father at the family TV/Electronics repair business to carpentry/woodworking and even skilled at auto mechanics.

He built the family's house, with the help of family and friends, in Linwood in 1965 where he and Mildred raised their three children. He loved to solve problems which were exemplified by his crossword puzzle prowess and completion of logic puzzles. He was the epitome of the guy that says, "I don't need the instructions" because he could have written them better than most of the manufacturers. Phil spent a lot of his leisure time playing golf which he loved and got good at, well better than the average hacker. He played in the NJ Bell league on Monday nights for over 20 years in which every now and then would bring home a trophy that he and his partner won in their flight.

Phil supported his children in whatever they did as he was a coach for the Linwood Panthers for years while his sons played and then the endless hours of working on their home improvement projects and whenever there was a car repair, he was the family AAA on the spot in a matter of minutes. He was a member of the Odd Fellows club for many years as he served as the Treasurer for most of his time.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; son David Camp (Belinda), son Michael Camp (Julie) and daughter Vicki. Phil also loved spending time with his grandchildren Marley and Makenna.

A private memorial will be held by the family.
