Obituary

John Elwood Stafford

September 26, 1943 – May 18, 2024

John Elwood Stafford, lovingly known as Duke, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2024, at the age of 80. He was born on September 26, 1943, in Hurffville, Washington Township, NJ. Duke most recently resided in Lebanon, PA before retiring to a nursing home in Mannington, NJ.

Throughout his life, Duke pursued various professions, including horse racing, security, and driving semi-trucks. Duke's family was his proudest accomplishment, and he cherished his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Duke had a zest for life and enjoyed various hobbies, including picking on his beloved wife, Pat, and watching old black and white movies such as "Arsenic and Old Lace".

To stay active, he loved playing pool and chatting with the other old men while bowling. He achieved multiple 600 games in bowling, a testament to his dedication and skill in the sport.

Duke had a sweet tooth and cherished anything sweet, with his favorite candies being those orange slice gummy candies. He would never turn down a fruit pastry or a bowl of ice cream.

He found immense joy in being a 'pain in the ass', spending time with his family, and indulging in slushies from the Turkey Hill gas station.

Duke is survived by his wife, Patricia Stafford, his children Barbara Haar and John C. Stafford, his grandchildren Richard Haar, Gwendolyn Haar, Gillian Stafford, and Beck Stafford as well as two great-granddaughters.

He leaves behind his dependents and friends who will fondly remember his great sense of humor, love for the ladies, and never-ending enthusiasm for playing pool with his kids and grandkids. In the words of John himself, "Oh is that right?" - a phrase that captured his playful spirit and brought joy to those who knew him well in his later years.

A private memorial service will be held to honor John's life and legacy. Please reach out to his daughter, Barbara Haar, with information regarding a celebration of life.
