Edward Kevin Deren

October 18, 1953 – October 23, 2026

Edward Kevin Deren, 73, of Somers Point, NJ, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2026 with his family by his side.

Ed was born October 18, 1953, in Newark, NJ, to the late Edward and Joan Deren. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School, Georgetown University, and later Baruch University, where he obtained his master’s degree in labor relations. He was a gifted artist and writer as well as an avid reader— there was very little he knew nothing about. He worked as a social services professional, a carpenter, a logistics manager, and in later years, a deli clerk. He loved to be outdoors and enjoyed fishing, gardening, and long hikes. He was a Quaker of great faith; he lived his life helping others and engaging in peaceful protest. His quick wit and sense of humor will be especially missed by his family and friends.

Ed was the devoted husband of 23 years to Nancy; loving father of Heather Allen and her husband Philip, Rebecca Lopez-Deren, and Robyn Crawford and her husband Jason; and cherished grandfather of Olivia and Christopher Crawford and Thomas and James Allen. While he reunites with his beloved pets, Percy and Caesar; he leaves behind his much-adored dogs, Bella, Abby, and Jethro.

A memorial service will be held 11am on November 21st at the Atlantic City Area Friends Quaker Meeting House (437-A South Pitney Road) in Galloway, NJ. It will be followed by a repast at 1pm at Ed’s favorite restaurant, The Anchorage Tavern, in Somers Point, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ed’s name to Heart of Surfing (301 Dorchester Drive, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234 heartofsurfing.org) or Cross Roads Camp and Retreat Center (29 Pleasant Grove Road, Port Murray, NJ 07865 www.crossroadsretreat.com).
